Corsica Assembly Officially Acknowledges State of Palestine
(MENAFN) The regional assembly of Corsica took a decisive stand Friday by officially recognizing the State of Palestine.
During the session, lawmakers on the Mediterranean island discussed a motion focusing on backing the Palestinian people and condemning Israel’s breaches of international law in the Gaza Strip.
The proposal, put forward by Assembly President Marie-Antoinette Maupertuis, secured approval.
Following the vote, Maupertuis stated on X: "The @AssembleeCorse recognizes the State of Palestine, denounces the genocidal acts committed against the Palestinian population, and opposes the use of Corsican and Sardinian military bases for operations that violate universal human rights." Sardinia, mentioned in her statement, is an autonomous region under Italian jurisdiction.
The resolution explicitly affirms that the Corsican Assembly "recognizes the existence of the State of Palestine, in accordance with previous United Nations resolutions.”
While the motion “reaffirms Israel’s right to exist in security and peace, in accordance with international law,” it also condemns the “repeated actions committed by the Israeli government” as “tantamount to international crimes, including the crime of genocide.”
Highlighting the critical need for a political resolution grounded in the coexistence of two sovereign states, the document urges mutual respect for each side’s political, collective, and religious rights.
The motion reasserts Corsica’s enduring solidarity with Palestinians, who have endured decades marked by occupation, discrimination, and systematic violence. It also calls on the French government to formally recognize the State of Palestine.
Additionally, the resolution demands France cease all deliveries of weapons, ammunition, and military gear to Israel as long as it continues actions that violate international law.
