Russia, Iran continue direct trips
(MENAFN) Russia has lifted its temporary flight ban over Iran, Iraq, and Jordan, resuming direct air travel following heightened tensions from the Israel-Iran conflict. The ban was initially imposed by Moscow due to safety concerns amid hostilities. Flights between Russia and Iraq and Jordan have also restarted.
During the conflict, major airlines like Lufthansa, Emirates, and Air France-KLM rerouted or canceled flights to avoid the airspaces of Israel, Iran, Jordan, and Iraq. Eurocontrol, a European air traffic organization, reported that around 650 flights were canceled during this period.
Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, announced on Friday that after ongoing risk assessments, the ban had been lifted but emphasized continuous monitoring of the situation. Airlines will be notified promptly if conditions change.
The first flight from Iran since the ban landed at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport on Friday, with Mahan Air arriving from Mashhad. A return flight departed the same day. Russia’s flagship carrier Aeroflot has also resumed ticket sales for its Tehran route, with flights planned three times a week starting July 4.
The resumption comes after Israel’s June 13 airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, which Iran condemned as unprovoked, retaliating with missile and drone attacks on Israeli cities. A US-brokered ceasefire is currently in place, with both sides claiming victory.
